On Monday, Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed a bipartisan housing bill that would have made it easier to build affordable housing by changing existing regulations that force developers to build large units on large lots.

HB 2570, also known as the "Arizona Starter Homes Act," would prohibit municipalities from requiring homeowner associations. This would have made housing units more affordable by eliminating HOA fees.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to appoint Russ Skinner to be the new Maricopa County sheriff on Feb. 8 following Paul Penzone's resignation last month.

Skinner, who served as the chief deputy sheriff under Penzone, will finish out the last 10 months of Penzone's term. It's unclear whether he will run for the position in November.

According to an Instagram statement from SJP on Jan. 25, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities cleared Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) on Thursday of rock-throwing allegations from the Nov. 14 Undergraduate Student Government (USG) meeting.

A coalition of Palestine advocacy organizations, including Students for Justice in Palestine at ASU, denounced a concurrent resolution on Monday that condemns Hamas and supports Israel outside of the Arizona State Capitol.

Despite the demonstration, the resolution was adopted unanimously and transmitted to the state Senate.

Arizona Rep. Athena Salman, D-Tempe, announced Wednesday that she will resign her seat in the legislature on Dec. 31 to lead a reproductive rights advocacy group. Salman represented the state legislative district that included ASU's Tempe campus.
